A retruded lower jaw (mandible) can make the upper teeth appear excessively prominent and can contribute to a less balanced facial profile. In growing patients, bringing the mandible forward can help improve not only facial aesthetics, but also the functional relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
For patients approaching the end of their growth phase, fixed functional appliances can be particularly useful. Appliances such as the AdvanSync2 by Ormco are designed to encourage forward positioning of the mandible while remaining relatively inconspicuous and allowing the patient to continue with their routine orthodontic treatment.
Mandibular advancement may improve the facial profile, overjet and dental relationship, while in appropriately selected patients, forward repositioning of the mandible may also contribute to increased upper-airway dimensions. However, airway improvement is individual and should not be considered guaranteed.
Prof. Gurkeerat Singh has been an advocate of mandibular protraction appliances for more than 25 years, with extensive clinical experience in functional jaw correction.
The objective is not simply to move teeth—it is to achieve a balanced jaw relationship, harmonious facial profile and sound functional result, using forces and mechanics that respect the biology of growth and adaptation.
Better balance. Better function. Better facial harmony.
